Rink Fotos selected photos from his years as a photo journalist yielded many funny, sexy, and poignant scenes, most notably his larger-than-life snap of Divine. His extensive career as a photographer for the LGBTQ community include coverage of demonstrations, street fairs, and personal photos of key people in the movement.
Kija Lucas uses lens-based media to discuss ideas about place and personal history. Her images use household objects and domestic tableaux to ask questions of how heritage and environment shape individuals. Lucas was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and currently resides in Oakland, California. She holds a A from San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from Mills College. Her work has been exhibited in Northern California, Mexico and Italy.
Sholeh Asgary, a Bay Area transplant, is currently completing her last year towards an MFA at Mills College in Oakland. “Effacement is a series of abstracted watercolor portraits exploring notions of identity through cosmetic manipulations. In these pieces, the effects of “extreme” plastic surgery as a modern day tool to self expression is examined in the surface of the face. In the pursuit of perfection for the “idea” of face, the physical face is ultimately effaced, resulting in a raw canvas that represents a reconciliation between the inner and outer worlds of one’s self, the abstract and the actual.
