Secretary, Spankings & Very Happy Endings

One of the first hot movies I ever saw was Secretary starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Spader (director: Steven Shainberg).  I was captivated.  For those who don’t know: Lee (Gyllenhaal) is a young woman who has been self-harming in order to deal with her unbearable life.  Upon leaving the psychiatric hospital to return to her unstable home life, she takes a course in typing and gets a job as a secretary to Mr. Grey (Spader), a local lawyer.  As she settles into her new role, the sexual tension between Lee and her new boss is electric, and eventually they launch into a BDSM relationship that transforms both of their worlds.  The story’s healing, touching, and proves that BDSM can be gloriously romantic.  The sex scenes aren’t explicit, but they’re hot as heck, and full of build and climax.  And boy, do I love a great sexual transformation!

I learned a lot about spanking from Secretary.  In fact, I can safely say that this sweet, kinky movie was the first time I realized that I’d enjoy being a sub myself.  In short, my sex-life changed because of the film, which isn’t surprising — Secretary is so empowering, endearing, sparky and delicious that, with Mr. Grey’s every thwack, it offers a wondrous permission.  And the power Lee gains by taking charge of her own desires is the stuff of fairy tales — the spiky-heeled variety, of course.

What I’m trying to say is that I love being turned on by both sex and story (which, by the way, is why I’m also gooey about Jennifer Bell’s Matinee (Blue Artichoke Films) — an explicit erotic movie that not only contains a great storyline but also some voluptuous public screwing).  In erotica, when characters dare to become in whole new ways, and sex is the driving force, all my engines are purring.

And it’s happy endings galore.
