From Inside the Store: Rabbit Style Vibrators

Having worked at Good Vibrations for a while, I’ve helped a lot of folks with a lot of different questions.  Although I get tons of unique questions, there are a few questions that pop up fairly often. This is one of ‘em:

“My friend recommended I get a rabbit style vibrator a while back, I bought one and I don’t really like it, why is that?”

This is a fairly common one, especially for folks who purchased a “rabbit” style vibrator as their very first vibrator. Before I go into why someone might prefer another toy, let me remind you that everyone is different.  Some folks LOVE twice-as-nice toys, and some folks don’t. Bodies are different, and likes/dislikes are different. This means, just because your friend likes something, doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll like it too. And hey, the only way to know is by trial-and-error. But before getting disappointed with your choice, congratulate yourself for trying something new!

These toys have ALL the bells and whistles and they come in a wide range of prices, materials, textures, colors, and sizes. Also, they are pretty well-known. Most people remember the “Turtle and the Hare” episode of Sex and the City where there rabbit (Vibratex’s Rabbit Pearl to be exact) made it’s first mainstream appearance. Since the rabbit became one of the only sex toys that people knew by name, it immediately became a best seller. In fact, I’d say that a good percentage of first-timers in Good Vibrations come in and specifically ask about the rabbit.

“So how do these toys work?”

Well these twice-as-nice toys can vary quite a bit. As far as price range is concerned, on one end you have the Butterfly Kiss Waterproof Vibrator and Flirty G Waterproof G-spot Vibrator.  These two are very simply designed and offer G-spot stimulation as well as simultaneous clitoral stimulation.  They are softer and smaller many of the other twice-as-nice toys, which makes them a great choice if you want to dip your toys into the “twice-as-nice style pool”.  They are easy to use (they have a button at the bottom which controls the vibration) and are battery operated.

On the other end of the spectrum, you have the Vanity Vr 12 Trinity.  The Trinity has dual motors, speed control, and is made of silicone.  The penetrative portion rotates in a circular motion and the portion that goes against the clitoris has a three-pronged “teaser”, which means you may experience a “fluttery” type of vibration.  It’s rechargeable, so instead of switching out batteries, you just plug it into the wall to charge-like you would charge a cell phone.

There are many twice-as-nice style toys in between.  The Calla Waterproof Silicone Vibrator by Fun Factory, the Aqua Rabbit Vibrator, the INA 2 Rechargeable Dual-Action Vibrator by LELO, the G-Swirl Smartvibe, the Bullet Bunny Waterproof Vibrator by Rocks-Off, and the FiFi Waterproof Rechargeable Vibrator by Je Joue to name a few.

“So why would someone dislike the toy that has everything?”

Like I said before, everyone is different.  Although the friend that recommended the rabbit may LOVE it, it may not be the right fit for you.  One concern that I hear the most is that “there is too much going on at once” with the twice-as-nice toys.  For some folks, internal vibration, G-spot stimulation, and vibration against the clitoris may be a bit too much (again, for others, this may be the everything they’ve wanted and more).  If this is the case, I usually suggest trying two toys, one for outside the body, and one for inside.  That way, if you find that you’re more in the mood for clitoral stimulation without any penetration, you can use one toy, and not the other.  Another way to give yourself more options is by using a vibrating cock ring on any internal toy.  Using the Big O Vibrating Cock Ring with the Marilyn Waterproof Vibrator gives you the twice-as-nice style option, but without the commitment!

Some folks have very specific things to say about twice-as-nice toys.  Some of these are not exclusive to the twice-as-nice style, but are just general concerns.  These concerns may include: size, how audible the toy is, shape, vibration intensity, and how long the batteries last.

So when you’re shopping for your first, or fiftieth vibrator, consider a few things:

  • Am I looking to buy a toy that is an improvement on my last one, or looking for something completely different?  If I’m looking to improve, what was it I disliked about my last toy?
  • How will this toy fit with my body?
  • How loud is it?
  • How does the material feel?
  • What kind of batteries does it take, and if it’s rechargeable, how long should it charge, what does the charger look like, and where is the charging port on the toy?
  • How will I clean it and what do I use to clean it?
  • Will it be compatible with the lubricant I already own, or should I buy a different kind?
  • Will I be using this strictly solo, or will I want to incorporate it into partner play?

As I said, everyone is different and everyone responds differently to different toys. That being so, it may helpful to look at reviews online, so you can get an idea of how other people have felt about the toy and complaints that they have (if any). They might think of things to look for that you haven’t, and the more knowledge you have when shopping for a toy, the better. And of course, if you’re shopping at Good Vibrations, don’t hesitate to ask any of the sex educator-sales associates. We love helping you get the toys that make you smile!
