Petra Joy Presents: The Female Voyeur

Best known for her art-core vignettes, Petra Joy developed longer episodes for her latest porn collection The Female Voyeur (2011) to “reflect the genuine female curve of arousal” — of women who like to gaze at men and call the shots. In particular, the film illustrates some key tenets of Petra’s creative vision, including the featuring of men as the objects of female sexual desire, male bisexuality, and men devoted to sexually pleasing women.

The first episode features a female photographer taking pictures of and seducing two male models before they all have sex. Accompanied by a fast almost abrasive metallic beat, the episode feels somewhat rushed as if to fit in all the various sexual acts necessary to fulfill Petra’s criteria for her progressive porn, beginning with the woman (at first dressed in a masculine black pant suit) instructing and taking pictures of the men (wearing only their underwear). Shot against a red backdrop, the picture at times splits into two, three, and four smaller images on the screen, accentuating the speedy feel of the episode. The woman receives plenty of oral sex, also by both men at the same time, before they all continue through a range of positions. The woman moans loudly when she comes. One of the men appears to come in the other man’s mouth.

The second episode is shot as a talent show with three men taking turns performing in front of an all-female jury. More playful in style, the men strut down the catwalk and spin around a pole, before they each display their individual talents. The first contender puts on a dance-strip-masturbation show, the second masturbates until he comes, and the third performs oral sex on two of the jurors. He wins.

The final episode is staged as a Roman orgy. By far the longest episode, the focus is at first on one woman being oiled and massaged by a group of men’s and women’s hands. More in tune with Petra’s previous art-core work, Petra in this episode rekindles her penchant for dissolving images and flowing camera movements, creating interesting effects by shooting through curtains and bedrails. Also filming from up above, framing a large bed covered by red sheets and the naked bodies of a group of women and men on top of it, the episode dwells on the enmeshment of flesh and limbs where it becomes unclear who’s being pleasured by whom; where the message instead conveyed is that at least in this case, it doesn’t matter who pleasures whom.

The cast on The Female Voyeur includes many familiar faces from Petra’s previous films. And as was the case on these too, several of the cast members are featured in more than one episode. With this film seeming more scripted in terms of content, the repetition of the cast members at times takes away from the credibility of the scene. In fact, I miss more of a sense of actual chemistry. That the scripted quality of The Female Voyeur is a result of Petra’s goals for a more progressive porn does, however, compensate some for its at times contrived and porny feel.
