Opening and Reception for Orgasm, Inc. 4/2/11

I’m thrilled to announce that the film Orgasm Inc. will be opening at the Roxie Theater in San Francisco on April 1 and showing through the 7th. And I’m just as happy to say that we’ll be hosting a recepti0n at our Valencia St. store, only a block away, on April 2 from 8:30-9:30.

I was fortunate to see an advance screening of the film at a conference last year. It’s an incredible documentary about the medicalization of female sexual pleasure as various pharmaceutical and medical device companies try to match the success of Viagra with a female equivalent. There are some really telling interviews, footage of FDA meetings, and a great mix of information, humor, and politics.

One of the things that I find so fascinating about this topic is the challenge of defining and measuring sexual pleasure. Of course, Viagra doesn’t enhance sensation or pleasure, just erections. I’ve often wondered how men would choose between a pill that guarantees an erection but only 50% of the pleasure, or one that guarantees amazing pleasure but an erection that goes soft 50% of the time. And the common assumption that erections = pleasure = satisfaction doesn’t map onto clitorises or vaginas very neatly. That’s central to the issues that Orgasm, Inc. raises so thoughtfully, since many companies have been pushing to create an identical model of female sexuality.

You’ll want to see this movie while it’s playing. And come on down to the store for wine, treats, discounts, and sexy prizes!
