It’s National Coming Out Day!

It’s that time again! October 11 is National Coming Out Day, an international day of awareness that focuses on the process of coming out for lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, transgender, genderqueer, gender transgressive, and other groups. It’s also a day for heterosexual and/or cisgender allies to show their support.

As a queer person, I can attest that coming out is a powerful experience. In a world that assumes heterosexuality and cisgender status, people who don’t fit into those categories are often rendered invisible. Of course, more and more people are living out of the closet these days, but even so, the more we come out, the more we can serve as role models for people who have been thinking about it and haven’t made the leap. And for the people who aren’t able to come out without jeopardizing their safety, when more folks make their presence known, we shift the cultural climate and hopefully, there will come a time when everyone can be open about their sexual orientation and gender identity.

So even if you’re out of all of the closets you can think of, celebrate National Coming Out Day today. Help create a world in which nobody has to live in the closet anymore.
