Healing Sex: An Interview with Jackie Strano

Sexual assault is all too common and unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of sex-positive resources for people who want to explore the effects that it has on sexuality. But the amazing Staci Haines wrote the book Healing Sex and Shar Rednour & Jackie Strano turned it into a DVD. It’s one of the best guides for people who are looking for ways to reclaim their sexual desires and work through the healing process.

Having read the book and watched the DVD, I can say that they’re both truly inspiring. And even if you’re not a survivor yourself, your partner might be and you definitely know people who are. So I highly recommend learning from these amazing guides.

I sat down with Jackie to find out a bit more about the DVD.

What inspired you to make Healing Sex?

Staci Haines. I worked with her for several years at Good Vibrations and she went on from GV to pursue her life path of being a Somatic Healer, author, and activist. She’s an amazing human being, such a wonderful person and we knew capturing her on video just had to happen given how warm and accessible she is. I wanted to have Staci Haines and her life’s work be committed to digital for time eternal. She’s a friend and an inspiration and I think the DVD has a wider reach than the book. We wanted to help people.

How have people have responded to the movie? Does anything stand out to you?

I have heard from people that they cried when they watched it, that they felt empowered and that it changed their life. I am so damn proud of this movie.

There’s not a lot of talk about sexual assault in sex-positive circles, and there’s not a lot of talk about pleasure in mental health circles. What sorts of feedback did the movie get from folks working in those communities?

That’s exactly the reason we wanted to make a sex positive mind/body holistic movie about healing from trauma and provide a bridge for these communities with somatic practices fully demonstrated. Staci embodies that perfect bridge and has actively joined various communities together that normally wouldn’t have sat down at the same table even though some basic principles are shared¦.I am very proud that Good Vibrations offers this movie as well as the book and leads the way in regards to pursuing your true authentic self and becoming empowered about your sexuality and sexual wellness. As Staci says in the movie: ‘You are more powerful than what happened to you’ that’s a compelling statement and shakes you to your core when you let that sink into your body as well as your mind. We also made sure to provide Spanish sub-titles so the DVD would have a greater reach.

Healing Sex is one of the few gender-neutral resources on healing from sexual assault. What sort of response did that create?

It was very intense. We got letters from people who said they were going to commit suicide but didn’t after watching the movie, letters about their relationship being saved, a lot of gratitude. Some people know it’s possibly too much for them when they first buy it and they hang onto it waiting til they are ready to view it. Some are very surprised that it hit them so hard as they didn’t know what to expect. It runs the gamut. Featured in the movie are women and men¦riveting stories/scenarios and characters that I think on some level most everyone can relate to or with

What are some of the differences between the movie and the book? How could someone use both of them together?

The movie is more universal through Staci’s experience from teaching and the response from the book. Visually seeing these stories brought to life and seeing somatic healing demonstrated is very powerful. The movies helps teach deeper because you see the book topics actually demonstrated.

Do you have any plans for more movies like this one?

I want to make sure this movie is seen far and wide first….of course there is room for more but honestly this DVD deserves more attention first. My wife & I had children immediately following the production of this DVD and as any new parent knows it’s a little difficult promoting a movie when you have an infant but it has been a steady seller and resource and I just want people to know it’s there and accessible for those who need help and who seek to feel empowered and not stuck¦.
