About Transgender Law Center:
Transgender Law Center works to change law, policy, and attitudes so that all people can live safely, authentically, and free from discrimination regardless of their gender identity or expression.
For Transgender Law Center and our clients, authenticity is both a standard for how the organization functions and the ultimate product of its work. For the people we serve, the freedom to live how they want to live, self-defined and self-determined, is the ultimate goal of their engagement with Transgender Law Center and the trans movement.
Too often, people who live outside of the socially-enforced binary boxes of gender pay a physical, emotional, and economic toll. Whether it’s a lack of access to quality and compassionate health care, or an out-of-date legal system that allows blatant discrimination, equality is too often out of reach for trans people. Transgender Law Center is devoted to fulfilling the promise of equality for all people, regardless of their gender expression.

Jazzie’s Place: America’s First LGBTQ Shelter
Jazzie’s Place, the first shelter in the country for the adult LGBTQ community. Operated by Dolores Street Community Services, and funded by both the city and private donations, Jazzie’s Place seeks to be a safe haven from the fear and violence that the city’s LGBTQ homeless population routinely experiences.
Jazzie’s Place opened its doors in the Mission District as the first LGBTQ adult emergency shelter in the nation! Jazzie’s Place is a new 24-bed shelter space aimed to serve the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, and gender non-conforming San Franciscans experiencing homelessness. Billy De Frank Center
The Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center opened its doors on March 1, 1981 in a two-room storefront on Keyes St. in south downtown San Jose. A year earlier, the DeFrank Center’s founders had watched with concern as Santa Clara County residents voted to repeal ordinances extending housing and employment protections to lesbians and gay men. The new DeFrank Center emerged from a desire to respond to this setback. As its first visitors entered they crossed the threshold to a new era of possibility for the gay and lesbian community of the South Bay, and they celebrated an important victory. Since then, the DeFrank Center has continued to inspire purposeful action and ensure a safe place to gather for all in our community. More than two decades have passed since those modest beginnings on Keyes St. Today the Billy DeFrank Center serves a large and diverse community. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people of all ages and backgrounds find resources at the Center that are not available elsewhere.
Through collaboration and unity, the Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center strives to provide a diverse platform for our community to meet, learn, be challenged and grow. The Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center strives to be the community’s premier resource hub and a recognized leader in promoting health, strength, diversity and inclusiveness.
