Go Ecorotic and Get Your Green On
A lot of people want to find ways to green their sex lives and here at Good Vibrations, we’re proud to help make that happen. Our Ecorotic Collection is full of all-natural & organic lubricants and body products like our Knead Me Massage Lotion, Probe Lubricant, Yes Organic Water-Based Lubricant, and Please Stroke Cream.
We support reducing the amount of waste by offering more durable and long-lasting vibrators and toys. After all, if they don’t need to be replaced as often, they’re not taking up space in landfill, right? And using our rechargeable toys means you don’t need to keep buying (and throwing away) batteries. Check out the Gigi, the Form 2, the Acuvibe Jr., and our other eco-friendly toys. And don’t forget the Little Chroma vibe, which has a replaceable motor, which minimizes the cost and waste if you need to replace it.
We also do a lot to reduce waste and keep things green behind the scenes because we think it’s important for us to walk the walk. So to give you a glimpse, here’s some of what we do:
Many of our staff ride bikes, walk or take public transit to work. We offer our staff Commuter Checks to make public transit easier.
We compost food waste in our breakrooms and recycle at our desks.
We reuse almost every type of office supply. File folders get relabeled and used until they fall apart. Paper gets reused in the fax machine or for memos. Interoffice envelopes get a piece of paper taped to the front so we can keep using them, even when all of the lines are filled up. When we open up the supply cabinet, nothing is new if it can possibly reused.
In our stores, we have floor models of every single toy so you can check them out and see how they work. Of course, that means that we go through quite a few batteries, so we recycle all of the used ones.
In our warehouse, we reuse packaging material such as peanuts, bubble wrap, and air pillows. Plus, when we do need to buy packaging materials, we use water-soluble peanuts which won’t fill up landfill for years to come.
Our process for transferring products from the warehouse to the stores is designed to be as efficient as possible. We minimize how many trips our van has to make to cut back on fuel consumption. And we regularly order products like vibrators, condoms, and batteries in bulk or with minimal packaging, which cuts back on wasted packaging and lets us transport more toys in less space. Plus, we have vendors drop ship as much as possible to our stores, reducing how much we need to unpack, repack, and transport them.
Just like “locavore” eating, where the food on your table comes from a fairly small radius around where you live, we work with local companies whenever we can. Most sex products aren’t made right here in the Bay Area, but we’re glad when we can offer the ones that are. Our lube and bodycare products are all locally made, including our Relax Me Fizzy Bath Balls, Soothe Me Bubble Bath, Rub Me Massage Bar. We also encourage and work with local manufacturers of Vulva Balm, Love Balm Natural Lubricant, and even our Neoprene Cock Ring.
In many sex toy stores, a lot of the toys sold are given as gag gifts and then thrown away. The two minutes of laughter is somehow more important than the longevity of that toy in a landfill. When we encourage people to see sex toys as worthwhile rather than a joke, fewer gag gifts are bought so fewer end up in the trash.
When information about phthalates in sex toys became known, we were the first company in the US to shift away from these products and to educate both our customers and our vendors. We encouraged manufacturers to develop new production methods and created a logo for our phthalate-free toys to make it easier for you to find them. These days, most toys are phthalate-free and manufacturers proudly label them as such, in part due to our efforts.
In fact, many of our customers have always tried to shop green, and the environment has always been important to us. Back in the 1980’s, we were the first company to return vibes that didn’t work to their manufacturers, long before the renaissance in quality sex products made this less necessary. This gradually resulted in better-made toys across the board, and when the manufacturers got used to it, they simply started giving us credit so we didn’t have to ship the broken products both ways. (A green and creative sideline is that over the years, we’ve donated a lot of these “no-starter” vibes to artists!) And we’ve accepted customers’ dead batteries for recycling since back in the day.
Of course, no matter how much we do to keep GV green, there’s always room for improvement. It’s a lot like sex: you can always discover new things to try to make things better. And of course, we love helping our manufacturers find more eco-friendly ways to make toys.
