Former Porn Star Loses Teaching Job

Here’s what aggravates me right now. A woman named Tericka Dye, who now goes by the name Tera Myers, was found to be a former porn star. Big deal, right? No, very wrong.

Tera Myers was a high school teacher in Missouri, raising four kids on her own. She was a working mother, like so many of us out there. She was making ends meet, taking care of herself, and paying taxes-like everyone else. Tera Myers was living her life as a respectable member of society. She loved teaching kids, and she was a good teacher.

From the news stories that I’ve read about her, a student approached her about her pornstar past, and things snowballed from there. News of a teacher being a former pornstar in the 90’s spread through the high school quickly, even reaching her son. Tera went to administration, and was placed on administrative leave for the remainder of the school year.

Whoa! Can this really be happening to her?

She served her country after she quit the biz, and used the military as a means to put herself through college so that she could get her teaching career started. Is that not respectable? SHE SERVED OUR COUNTRY!

Furthermore, big deal! Just because she was once an adult performer, does that mean that she couldn’t also be one helluva teacher, too? In my opinion only, I think that by choosing to teach high school aged kids – who may decide one day to sneak into Mom and Dad’s porn stash from, oh, I dunno, the 90’s – she should have known that there was a risk to being exposed, and she should have known that the attention that being exposed would bring would not portray her in a positive light. Instead, panic would spread from parent to parent and they would treat her horribly and demand she lose her job. That’s just the way people are. It’s a situation very much like the Salem Witch Trials.

Tera Myers isn’t an idiot, I’m sure. She was smart enough to use the GI Bill to get an education, she was smart enough to use that education to support herself and her four children, and she was smart enough to take this problem to administration. It does make me wonder if she didn’t see this one coming since she had lost a teaching job in Kentucky in 2006 on the exact same grounds.

All that being said here, it would have been a better idea for her to teach younger kids. Teenagers are bags of hormones wrapped in bodies that they don’t yet understand yet. What would have crossed your mind if you’d have found out that your third period Biology teacher was once a porn star? The kids would have had a hard time concentrating, that’s for sure. That’s why I think a younger class would be the answer for her-in case she decides to keep teaching in the future, and I hope that she does. For her to give up would be to let the world know that she doesn’t mind being pushed around and that judgy people are allowed to push her buttons all they want.

Another thought that unsettled me more than just a little bit was that Tera Myers has kids herself. If she’s well and fit enough to take care of her own children, why can’t she teach others’ children? I doubt very seriously that her students would walk into her classroom one day and she’d be sitting on her desk, spread eagled, wearing a thong and wielding a leather whip, though that’s possibly the very picture that the administers of the district she worked for were imagining when they let her go. She has built a life for herself only to have it taken away because of the stupidity of others.

Tericka Dye/Tera Myers told Dr. Phil (2006) that working in the porn industry was the worst choice she’d ever made, but I find myself wondering if she didn’t enjoy it at the time. Possibly she regrets it because now it’s a hindrance to her future happiness and, also, to the welfare and well-being of her family. After all, she’s raising four kids.  Regardless of why she regrets working in the adult film industry, she’s being treated way unfairly.

I don’t know why this woman decided to star in adult films at the time, but that doesn’t really matter. Either way you color it, she wanted to do it or she wouldn’t have. Even if she did it for money reasons, she still wanted to. She shouldn’t have to defend the decisions she made in the 90’s to a board of educators who probably had their day in the sun at one point in time, too. Think back to your youth. Didn’t you have a few moments of fun here and there that, if they were exposed, you might take some heat for now? I think we all did. I know I did. So, what in the world makes them think it’s okay to treat her this way? Is it because maybe she might have had a smidge more fun in her endeavors than they had? Or is it because they’re all imagining in their heads that this teacher was sending subliminal messages to her students, willing them to go crazy (you know, watch porn, knock over convenience stores, have babies in high school, do drugs, that sort of thing)?

I’m going to keep following this story as much as possible. My heart goes out to her, as a mother, because I know that she just wants what every mother wants. Happy kids, a life of her own, to live in peace. I know she has it in her to pick up and start again. After all, look at everything she’s already accomplished in her life. She’s been a porn star, served in our military (imagine all the things she must have seen!), put herself through college, and built a teaching career – all by herself!

Tericka/Tera, I’m rooting for you. Keep in mind that being an adult film star does not make you a bad or irresponsible mother or teacher. She’s living her life. Possibly, others need to start living theirs and leave hers alone.

What ever happened to live and let live?
