Does Ryanair Really Need To Offer Porn?

Ryanair is certainly no stranger to controversy. Among other things, they’ve been accused of creating sexist ads and calendars for a while now. It isn’t clear to me how much they’re motivated by the desire to generate free news and how much they’re aiming for a particular demographic. But their latest move is sure going to do both.

According to Gizmodo UK, the airline is developing an in-air entertainment app for iPads and smartphones that will include, among other things, a porn channel. It seems that the project is pending a deal with an in-air broadband provider.

If you’ve been reading anything I’ve written about porn, you’ll know that I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with it, while also acknowledging that there are lots of real problems that the porn industry needs to deal with. But even so, I don’t think in-air porn is the right thing to do.

Separate from the issue of whether Ryanair is deciding to make their flights adult-only, there’s a real issue of consent here. Even someone who is comfortable with porn doesn’t always want to see it. And there are people who are fine with certain sorts of porn, but not others and who don’t want to have it in their faces. Plus, of course, there are people who don’t want to be around it at all, for a variety of reasons. Whichever group someone might be in, if the person sitting next to them is watching porn on their ipad, it’s pretty much impossible for them to not see it. Putting folks in situations in which they have no choice but to see it (or put on a blindfold) is not the act of honoring consent.

Not cool, dude.
