Cherry Bombin’ Wear: Hand-Made Bike Rubber Accessories Make DIY Sexy!
An interview with Angela, owner of Cherry Bombin’ Wear!
Good Vibrations was founded in 1977 by Joani Blank and to this day continues to be woman-focused. The executive and top level management team is all woman-run, many of whom have been with the company for 20 years! From Chief Operating Officer Jackie Strano and Chief Cultural Officer and Staff Sexologist Dr. Carol Queen, to our Purchasing Manager Coyote Days, who corresponds with many new companies entering the adult novelty industry, Good Vibrations supports women in leadership positions.
Many of our vendors are women-owned businesses and we’ll be spotlighting these extraordinary companies in a series of interviews with the women who make it happen.
This interview by Coyote Days profiles Angela Riccobono from Cherry Bombin’ Wear — a DIY woman-owned small business that reuses 100% recycled rubber to create BDSM bedroom products such as restraints, harnesses, and floggers that are as Ecorotic® as they are sexy!
How’d you get started? What gave you the idea?
I was living in San Francisco at the time and spotted a small basic, hand-sewn rubber bike tube wallet at a boutique. I was stunned and immediately my imagination soared! All I could visualize were bike messenger bags, high fashion runway clothing and other useful goods like purses, wallets, wrist cuffs and belts — which I also currently design. Being a vegetarian/vegan for about ten years and an avid cyclist for nearly 15, with a stockpile of bike tube flats in the garage, all of this made perfect sense. Searching for my path & direction was the very reason why I moved to SF. I didn’t actually think about intimate ‘bedroom’ hardware until after… (ahemmm)… my prude girlfriend (at the time) and I broke up. The break-up was rough but it was an epiphany; a blessing in disguise that guided me to complete my life’s circle of passion and purpose.
Expanding Cherry Bombin’ Wear into having an intimate erotic accessory line not only took business to the next level of ultimate sultry sexiness, but now it directly corresponds with my college Liberal Arts degree in Women & Gender Studies. Like HELLO… can we say “totally awesome” or what?!! My passion for queer (LGBTQ), women, animal and environmental rights activism HANDLED, all in one! My work and purpose suddenly became pro-active living… REAL LIFE!
What obstacles have you found along the way?
Oh well ya know, life is an obstacle… so what do you mean? (LOL) Everything: from turning my thoughts into reality, to gracefully weeding out negative people and continuing to stand with pride/strength during the most intimidating/challenging circumstances — whether they are physical, financial or psychological. Every step taken is an obstacle, regardless of the degree and all of them keep me inspired to grow, learn and push the limits. The obstacles in life have created my way, but it is up to me on how to carry myself though them. It is finding grace and comfort within the discomfort of our lives that keeps us positive and strong. All I can continue to do is express gratitude and appreciation for all of my blessings, including everyone who has touched my life/ helped me along the way. <3
What does it mean to you that you own a woman/LGBT-run company?
Owning a women/LGBTQ- run company defines my life! Like I said above, associating my company and it’s designs with women, queer and sex positive ‘bedroom’ accessories really completes my passion and purpose in life. I mean seriously… knowing that each rubber tube I put my hands onto, making one of the three intimate ‘sexy time’ items, contributes to the ecstasy of queer and/or sex positive intimacy brings me the most joy I could ever imagine! All of my products, especially these define what I believe, my ethics values and purpose in life — and I couldn’t ask for anything else!
Which of your products is your personal favorite?
Ah geez… this question is rough…(no pun intended)… hahahaha. Although the restraints define my entry into the Ecorotic® market and are the most versatile, I am most excited about the harness, not only because it’s the sexiest but because it was the most challenging to design… back to the obstacle question, heh. One of my biggest fears is designing something that will fail. Because of the elasticity of the rubber, I was concerned that it wouldn’t have enough integrity for the harness to fulfill its job and that’s a BIG job, ya know! So seeing the harness successful and complete with its dual styles of jock and thong makes me so proud. This harness is seriously the best alternative to leather, if even better not only because of it’s lifespan, but the rubber is non-porous and can be cleaned better than leather as well. I would have never imagined making such useful, wonderful sexy intimate accessories in the whole world! I love every minute of it. Thank you so much for believing in my products!!!
