blueMotion & the Future of Vibration: a chat w/OhMiBod

blueMotion_beauty_loEVENT REMINDER! Good Vibrations hosts our friends from OhMiBod TONIGHT (July 31, 2014) at our Palo Alto store! Yes, we’re bringing cutting-edge sex tech right to the Silicone Valley! See below for details.

Good Vibrations is so excited to offer the latest example of the out-of-the-box vibratory thinking that our friends at OhMiBod bring to everything they do. The blueMotion is an app-enabled vibe that let people stay close and get frisky no matter how far from one another they are, and we know our customers have been waiting a long time for the promise of “teledildonics” to come to fruition. We’re really in the 21st century now!

Here’s the buzz about the blueMotion: The creative minds at OhMiBod have brought long-distance functionality to a discreet and versatile panty vibrator. The tech-enabled remote wireless vibe, controlled by Bluetooth connection to your smartphone (with a free app for both iPhone and Android), allows a user to control the panty vibe from afar––26 feet if you’re using the Bluetooth connection and anywhere in the world via Wi-Fi (in-app purchase available for the Wi-Fi option). The vibrator comes with pre-set vibrational patterns, but you can also tap and record new patterns, record audio, and direct the toy to vibrate to the rhythm of pre-selected music, like OhMiBod’s other music-enabled vibes. Instead of using a remote, control the vibrator by moving your phone around. And there’s no rush: the battery charge lasts for up to one hour of use.

I talked to Brian Dunham, founder (with his wife Suki) of the innovative OhMiBod line, which, besides their music-driven vibration like the Club Vibe (which responds to the beat of the music around you or delivered via your smartphone or MP3 player), has also yielded a fruitful and frisky business relationship with Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kandi Burruss and her Bedroom Kandi line.

Here’s what Brian had to say:

CQ: The idea of “teledildonics” has been around for 20 years or more—what is it about blueMotion that makes it a contender as we increasingly integrate sex toys with sophisticated technologies?

Brian: I think mainly that it’s the ease-of-use, relative to historic teledildonic formats, that has dramatically improved. 20 years ago the idea of “connecting” to someone via a social network was non-existent. The combination of this and the technology embedded in smart phones today makes the OhMiBod Remote App a fun and easy-to-use tool with which to connect intimately.

CQ: What’s your dream about this toy in terms of the role it will play in people’s sex lives?

Brian: A lot of people talk about the concept of “replacing” human intimacy with robotic touch. We believe pretty strongly that it’s just the opposite––that by leveraging existing technologies in order to augment or even establish a physical bond between two people , it will result in a stronger and more dynamic sex life.

When we were growing up, our first “intimate” connection was holding hands in a movie theater or that first kiss at a school dance. In the generation unfolding today, their first “intimate” connection might be a text or a snapchat. There is a paradigm shift of enormous magnitude taking place right now. It’s both exciting and terrifying.

Our goal is two fold with the OhMiBod Remote App: 1) to strengthen existing bonds and create new ones between couples and 2) to fundamentally embrace the technology that is ever present in our daily lives, and use it to bridge the intimacy chasm that it too often creates.

CQ: It’s not an accident, is it, that this couple-centric product is made by a company run by a couple? Both of you, Suki and Brian, are such important movers and shakers (sorry, <g> ) at OhMiBod—what edge does that give you as you develop new toys?

Brian: Since the inception of OhMiBod, we set out to design toys and technologies that solved our own problems as a couple. Take our first music vibrator, for example. Suki could escape her daily routine simply by listening to her favorite music. Integrating music into a vibrator made it infinitely easier for her to get to that “sexy place.” We’re also passionately aware that UI (user interface) plays a significant role in our everyday lives and sometimes is the difference between a good product… and a great one. With blueMotion and the OhMiBod Remote App, the focus was pretty heavily slanted towards making a beautifully designed, easy-to-use interface backed up by some pretty sophisticated technology.

Being a couple designing products together definitely plays a significant role in any success we may or may not achieve…but more importantly we have a lot of fun in the process. I think ultimately, though, it’s our passion for pushing boundaries and bringing new concepts to market that keeps us in the game.

This should be suitable for those couples who practice a milder version of BDSM!
