An Interview With Amber Dawn Tralala: Erotic Filmmaker and GV IXFF Finalist

The Good Vibrations Indie Erotic Film Fest has been amazing! Tomorrow night, we’re wrapping things up with the IXFF Short Erotic Film Competition at the Castro Theater. To get you in the mood for an evening of fun, sexy short films, here’s an interview with Amber Dawn Tralala, director of HORSEY. Get your ticket here!

Tell us a bit about your film. What’s it about? And what inspired you to create it?

My film HORSEY was a wonderful by-product of a scene with Bren Ryder for the queer porn website After shooting and viewing the scene (which features me fucking a horse-headed butch) I realized how frequently I return to places of childlike imagination and wonder via sex and kink, and so I invited Bren to return to the footage and create a short, artsy film intended for film festival screenings.

Seven minutes or less is a pretty tight limit. What are some of the challenges in creating a short erotic film?

I am a fan of very short, short films. My motto is “get on, go hard, and get off” … the screen. I believe that emerging filmmakers can sometimes get too attached to their footage and not edit enough. I am happy to keep HORSEY and my other films under seven minutes.

What’s your background in film or in making erotic films? How does making an erotic film differ from making a non-erotic one?

I’ve only made erotic films (five in total) and most of my writing and performance art is in one way or another erotic. I cannot separate my sexuality from other aspects of myself.

What do you hope audiences will get from your work?

HORSEY is meant to be fun and uplifting. It’s a “tip of my hat” to everyone who finds happiness, validation, self-appreciation, etc. through sex and play. My other work has dealt with more challenging aspects of my sexuality (healing as a surivor, battling stigma, etc) so I was thrilled to make a purely fun, sexy film.

Who are your performers, and how did you meet them/invite them to participate?

There are two of us seen in HORSEY. Myself and Bren Ryder. We’ve shot a few queer porn scenes over the last five years. We have a great working chemistry.

Were there any funny or unexpected moments while filming?

Bren had to wear a rubber horse mask for a couple hours while filming. She couldn’t see very well, and the mask doesn’t breath very well either. Our film showcases rather “vanilla” sex, but once that horse mask was put on, Bren found herself in a bit of a bondage scenario. She was such a good co-star. Very patient and gracious.

What projects are you working on now/next?

I hope Bren and I can team up and make a new short film before January 2012. Currently, we only have a storyboard and a willingness to work together … but that’s served us very well in the past. We’re quite DIY and organic about our filmmaking process, so I hope we can create new work very soon.
