A few weeks ago, I was interviewed as part of a really fascinating documentary called [SSEX BBOX]. The reason for the funny name? They’re filming people in 4 of the most sex-positive cities in the world, Barcelona, Berlin, San Francisco and São Paulo. By comparing the local sexual languages and cultures, the filmmakers will shed new light on the current sexual trends and perspectives in a global context.
Here’s part of their statement:
[SSEX BBOX] is unique because:
1- It features exclusive interviews with well-known personalities and authorities on sex and human sexuality.
2- It offers viewers a window into the lives of some participants during work, in leisure, with friends, and in love relationships.
3- In each episode, guests will discuss a new subject.
4 – In the video, the [SSEX BBOX] is more than a metaphor it is a physical box filled with special questions. Participants pick a random question and ask the group to respond, to share, to search, and to explore the diverse ways people approach sex.
5 – Groups and organizations involved in politics and human rights are part of the [SSEX BBOX] network.
6 – The diversity of the program is suported by the fact that we can receive video submissions from online users – virtual interviews recorded on many types of cameras, in different formats. This means we can receive content from anyone with access to a camera!
[SSEX BBOX] promotes the freedom to discuss sexuality openly in diverse cultures, without making speeches or glossing over the difficult parts. The hope is that this project will bring to light new ways of approaching sexuality, and ultimately participate in the forming of a cohesive vision of healthy sexuality, while creating space for the dissemination of honest, inclusive, information on sex and sexuality.
Their plan is to release bi-weekly 10-minute episodes, featuring different folks who work in sexuality fields. There’ll also be an online opportunity for anyone to submit their own films with their responses to the different topics, which will be integrated into the series.
The project is in the startup phase, so they’re looking for help getting the word out and for donations, film submissions, and such. It’s going to be an incredible piece of work and I can’t wait to see what they come up with.
Here’s a trailer. How many sex educators do you recognize?
